Incheon Port Pursues Expanded Ties With Malaysia and India

South Korea's Incheon Port Authority is working to establish additional container shipping services connecting Malaysian and Indian ports. A geopolitical crisis in the Middle East has pressured regional cargo flows. IPA officials and representatives from Korean liner operators HMM, KMTC Line, and Namsung Shipping recently visited Port Klang and Indian terminals to explore partnership opportunities. Port Klang-Incheon traffic fell 34% last year and declined another 13% through May. The port authority aims to leverage Port Klang's position as Southeast Asia's second-busiest container hub to access the region's extensive feeder networks without requiring direct service investments. Port Klang's transhipment costs run 30%-40% below competing regional ports, offering significant savings for shipping lines. The facility has successfully managed high volumes through terminal diversification between Northport and Westport. For South Korean exporters, particularly battery manufacturers, Port Klang provides an alternative distribution route to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East amid rising congestion at other Asian gateways.
