India's finance minister flagged mounting trade imbalances with China on Friday, citing Beijing's use of non-tariff barriers that effectively block Indian goods from Chinese markets. Nirmala Sitharaman characterized the restrictive measures as a fundamental obstacle to bilateral commerce between the two nations. The complaint reflects broader regional tensions over market access. Separately, the European Union is moving to strengthen its own trade enforcement mechanisms in response to record trade surpluses with China. EU trade officials held discussions with Chinese counterparts last week as Brussels develops new safeguards that could restrict specific countries or companies from accessing its single market. The proposed measures follow a $35 billion EU-China trade surplus recorded in September.
