India Targets Top-Five Global Shipbuilding Position by 2047

India is pursuing an aggressive shipbuilding expansion plan designed to elevate the nation into the world's top five shipyards by 2047, according to maritime officials. The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 framework aims to move India from its current 11th-place ranking to the top 10 by 2030. The strategy combines government funding, industrial policy overhauls, and international partnerships to expand domestic capacity while building an Indian-owned merchant fleet. Officials indicated the approach represents a comprehensive departure from past maritime strategies. It addresses physical infrastructure alongside green shipping standards, maritime training, port modernization, and fleet development. India currently accounts for less than 0.5% of global shipbuilding output, with China, South Korea, and Japan dominating the sector. The government plans to leverage state-owned companies as anchor demand sources while investing in coastal shipyards to close the competitive gap.
