Freight Fraud Awareness Day returns this year as cargo theft schemes grow increasingly sophisticated. The third annual campaign aims to break industry silence surrounding stolen identities, deceptive pickups and double brokering schemes that often go unreported.

Organizers including Verified Carrier, Truckstop, Northland Insurance, Travelers, GenLogs, FreightValidate and Freight Bites are emphasizing education, awareness and open dialogue. The initiative encourages professionals to share experiences without disclosing operational safeguards that criminals could exploit.

Criminal tactics have shifted dramatically as digital tools enable identity manipulation from remote locations. Modern threats differ substantially from traditional cargo theft requiring physical proximity to freight. "We went from a traditional bad guy waiting at the truck stop," according to risk managers in the sector. Criminals can now "digitally manipulate somebody's identity and the supply chain."

Andrey Drotenko, president of strategic relations at Verified Carrier, frames the campaign as an opportunity for collaboration. "It's a moment to slow down, compare notes, and just act together," he explained. By working collectively, industry advocates hope to bridge gaps in fraud prevention and build stronger collective defenses.
