Intermodal Growth Outpaces Carload Freight in Latest Rail Traffic Report

Intermodal container and trailer volumes showed stronger growth than carload freight in the week ending July 18. The Association of American Railroads reported 297,017 intermodal units, up 7 percent year-over-year, while total carloads and intermodal units combined reached 523,900, up 3.2 percent. Weekly combined traffic totaled 14.2 million carloads and intermodal units, reflecting a 3 percent gain. Six of 10 tracked carload commodity groups posted year-over-year growth, with metallic ores and metals climbing 9.9 percent and petroleum products advancing 2 percent. Year-to-date combined traffic through mid-July totaled 19.5 million carloads and intermodal units, marking a 2 percent improvement across U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads.
