Brokerages and startups are developing automated investment agents designed to manage portfolios and execute trades continuously. This shift marks progress toward hands-off wealth management. These agents enable investors to set parameters around risk tolerance and financial goals, then operate with minimal human oversight. Podium Markets AI has launched an assistant called Ivy that analyzes customer portfolios across multiple brokerage accounts and generates recommendations based on individual objectives. However, most current implementations maintain human control over final execution decisions. "The AI informs, but the human decides," said Dirk Mueller-Ingrand, co-founder and CEO of Podium Markets AI. Financial technology experts project these agents will eventually expand beyond securities trading. They could manage taxes, cash balances, borrowing and mortgages alongside investment portfolios. "Effectively everybody has their own family office that is working 24/7 for them while they're awake or sleeping," said Devin Ryan, head of financial technology research at Citizens. The industry is taking a gradual approach to full autonomy, prioritizing investor oversight before progressing to fully autonomous systems.
