European e-commerce operators face an unexpected supply chain squeeze in January as three separate demand waves converge simultaneously. Christmas returns surge in early January, with UK Royal Mail projecting half a million gift returns in the first week alone, representing a 25% increase year-over-year. Simultaneously, consumers pursuing New Year health resolutions drive demand for supplements, sports nutrition and fitness equipment. UK retail sales volumes jumped 1.8% in January 2026, marking the largest monthly gain since May 2024. Online sports supplement sellers led this growth. Meanwhile, holiday closures across EU markets compress delivery windows to just 11 working days over three weeks in some regions. The convergence strains warehouse capacity, dock doors and sorting infrastructure at a time industry calendars typically classify as off-peak.
