JBS Abandons 2040 Net-Zero Target, Narrows Climate Focus

JBS, the world's largest beef and poultry producer, has scrapped its net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal across its supply chain by 2040. The meat processor announced the decision in its sustainability report released July 8, citing immense execution challenges. The company also eliminated scope 3 emissions reduction targets, which encompass indirect supply chain emissions totaling over 184 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually. JBS will redirect efforts toward scope 1 and 2 direct emissions, representing just 3% of overall carbon footprint. Global Chief Sustainability Officer Jason Weller stated the company is "sharpening" climate goals rather than abandoning climate action. New targets include a 30% reduction in direct emissions by 2030 and 70% reduction by 2050, both measured against 2019 baselines across core operations.
