The Ports of Indiana has received a $25 million BUILD grant from the Department of Transportation, marking the largest federal award in the organization's 65-year history. The funding supports a $32 million expansion at the Jeffersonville facility on the Ohio River. The project will more than double the port's general cargo capacity and increase lifting capability from 35 tons to 300 tons by 2028. Infrastructure improvements include a new 300-ton crane system, a 6,500-square-foot dock, and a 22,000-square-foot warehouse. The expansion will establish Jeffersonville's first general cargo facility outside the floodplain and double barge-rail transloading capacity. Ports of Indiana Chief Executive Jody Peacock called the initiative transformational for the southern Indiana region. The upgrade aims to position Jeffersonville as a premier Midwest multimodal freight hub while supporting regional manufacturers and farmers.
