Kenya Airways Pursues 777F Lease to Expand Cargo Operations

Kenya Airways is finalizing arrangements to add a Boeing 777 freighter to its cargo fleet while pursuing a 40% market share target. The airline currently holds an 11% share of the cargo market. Chief executive George Kamal announced the development during a mid-year financial briefing, noting the 777F will operate on a long-term lease with approximately 100 tons of capacity. Kenya Airways previously had a capacity arrangement for a 747-400 freighter, operated by Moldovan carrier Terra Avia, but terminated it after fuel costs surged earlier this year. The carrier maintains a fleet of four converted narrowbody freighters—two 737-800P2Fs and two 737-300P2Fs—offering roughly 70 tons of capacity. Cargo revenues climbed 18% in the first half of 2026, reaching KShs8.8 billion ($68 million). The airline plans to eventually operate three 777Fs by decade's end as part of its expansion strategy.
