The Port of Los Angeles handled 1.42 million TEUs in September, marking the strongest single month in Western Hemisphere history, according to Executive Director Gene Seroka. The surge reflected lower tariff levels, sustained consumer demand, and cargo rerouting from congested Panama Canal and Suez passages. September imports reached 546,000 loaded TEUs, up 19% year-over-year and 26% above the five-year average. Exports rose 10% to 126,000 TEUs, while carriers repositioned 371,000 empty containers to Asia. The third quarter delivered nearly 3 million TEUs, the port's strongest on record. Year-to-date volume through September stood at 8.1 million TEUs, up about 3% compared to the same period in 2025. Seroka warned that tariff uncertainty continues driving rapid importer decisions and complicating final-quarter forecasts.
