Contract negotiations resumed May 14 in Manhattan between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and five unions representing 3,500 Long Island Rail Road workers. The coalition includes the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, Transportation Communications Union, Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. A strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. on May 16 looms. The unions seek 14.5% wage increases over four years, citing Long Island's high cost of living. The MTA countered with smaller raises and a $3,000 lump-sum payment. Two Presidential Emergency Boards composed of rail industry experts have supported the unions' position. MTA officials warn that accepting union demands could trigger significant fare increases. The coalition authorized strike action May 8 if negotiations fail.
