Loadsmart has undergone a strategic transformation since 2021, with software-as-a-service revenue now representing half of the company's gross profit, according to co-founder and CEO Felipe Capella. The New York-founded, Chicago-based freight technology firm launched in 2014 as a digital broker. The company faced a critical choice: reduce costs or develop higher-margin revenue streams to justify its research-and-development spending. It selected the latter path, launching ShipperGuide, a transportation management system for midsize and enterprise shippers, and OpenDock, a dock-scheduling platform deployed across more than 4,500 North American distribution centers and warehouses. Capella attributed the pivot to lessons learned from competitors that collapsed during freight market downturns after failing to adjust cost structures or create diversified revenue lines. Loadsmart maintained healthy growth throughout the 2023-2024 freight downturn when many brokers experienced gross profit declines.
