The Port of Long Beach has authorized $58.2 million to accelerate its transition to zero-emissions operations. This marks another major step toward its goal of becoming the world's first zero-emissions port. The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the funding June 22, drawing from California's State Transportation Agency for System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport grant program. The investment will fund acquisition of 61 zero-emissions cargo-handling units and 21 associated chargers, deployment of six zero-emission harbor craft and five cleaner diesel-replacement vessels, and a zero-emission locomotive. Port leadership emphasized the initiative supports goods movement efficiency while reducing environmental impacts on neighboring communities. The funding reflects POLB's broader commitment to incentivizing early technology adoption among tenants and operators seeking cleaner cargo handling solutions.
