The Port of Long Beach is undertaking a major infrastructure overhaul to strengthen its position as a gateway for U.S. containerized trade. The $8 billion Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility Program will expand the existing rail yard from 82 acres to 171 acres by 2032. The expansion enables the port to assemble and disassemble 10,000-foot trains and more than triple annual on-dock rail cargo volumes. The port handled a record 9.9 million TEUs in 2025, with $300 billion in annual cargo value flowing through the facility. The project addresses longstanding bottlenecks including complex underground utility relocations and right-of-way constraints. Completion of the rail expansion is expected to reduce truck traffic, lower regional emissions, and improve air quality in surrounding Southern California communities.
