The Port of Los Angeles handled 1,042,652 twenty-foot equivalent units in September, surpassing its previous monthly peak by more than 20,000 TEUs. The milestone capped the port's strongest quarter and four-month period on record, moving nearly 3 million and 4 million TEUs respectively during those stretches. Loaded imports climbed 19% year-over-year to 545,696 TEUs, while exports gained 10% to 125,751 TEUs. Empty containers hit an unprecedented 371,206 TEUs. Through nine months, the Southern California gateway processed nearly 8.1 million TEUs. This pace ran 3% ahead of the prior year. Port leadership attributed the surge to sustained consumer demand, inventory replenishment cycles, and cargo diversion from congested international routes. Tariff reductions from earlier 2026 levels provided importers greater cost certainty, further boosting throughput.
