The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 19 is opposing Union Pacific's proposed acquisition of Norfolk Southern in its current form, citing inadequate worker protections. The union represents approximately 2,000 locomotive and heavy equipment mechanics across both carriers. District 19 says the merger "lacks meaningful, enforceable protections" for workers and rail facilities. Union Pacific offered only a "jobs for life" guarantee, which the union says fails to protect against furloughs, position eliminations, work relocations and subcontracting. Union leadership points to historical precedent from previous rail consolidations, where thousands of mechanical jobs disappeared post-merger despite regulatory assurances. The union is demanding clear, binding protections for workers and facilities before supporting the deal and will continue advocating during the regulatory review process.
