Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are restructuring the Gemini Cooperation's Asia-Mediterranean network, with changes rolling out in late November as the carriers prepare for full Suez Canal resumption by the first quarter of 2027. Hapag-Lloyd chief executive Rolf Habben Jansen said the phased return approach allows the carriers to manage port and hub capacity effectively. The two lines are introducing a new transhipment hub-only service between China and the western Mediterranean. The AE18/SE5 service will call Shanghai, Xiamen, Tanjung Pelepas, Algeciras and Tangier. A 13,100 teu Maersk vessel will operate the inaugural sailing. Habben Jansen indicated all Gemini services should transit Suez by Q1 2027, with possible exceptions.
