Maersk has substantially shifted its eastbound container volumes departing Southern California ports away from BNSF Railway to Union Pacific Railroad. The shift accelerated in late May, with Union Pacific surpassing 50% of volumes by early June and reaching roughly 76% by mid-June, with UP now handling 77% of Maersk's volume in that region. Approximately 1,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of Maersk's weekly Southern California outbound capacity have moved to Union Pacific. The carrier routes these shipments via UP's Long Beach-to-Chicago service, terminating near Joliet, Illinois, and the Long Beach-to-Dallas corridor. Maersk maintains active contracts with both railroads. The transition involved roughly 100,559 TEUs, with BNSF previously handling 90% of that volume.
