A coalition of major shippers including Microsoft and PepsiCo has placed an order for 2,500 Class 8 battery-electric trucks. This group buying approach allows participating companies to negotiate lower per-unit costs while scaling adoption of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. Tesla will serve as the primary original equipment manufacturer for the order, with Volvo, Kenworth and RIDE offering alternatives to accommodate specialized customer requirements. The aggregated demand strategy helps address cost barriers to electric truck adoption. Participating companies are pursuing the purchase as they work toward decarbonization targets and prepare for tightening emissions standards in commercial transportation.
