Metra unveiled a specially painted locomotive marking the nation's 250th anniversary. The locomotive is the 26th of 42 remanufactured SD70-MACH units ordered from Progress Rail Locomotives of La Grange. These locomotives were converted from former freight engines and feature upgraded components for passenger service. Senior Graphic Designer Falecia Woods created the commemorative design with input from operations staff. Metra Executive Director Jim Derwinski called the locomotive a gift honoring railroads' role in national development. The agency initially ordered 15 units in January 2019 and exercised options for 27 additional locomotives, totaling $206 million through state and federal funding. Final deliveries are expected by end-2027. The remanufactured fleet meets EPA Tier 3 emissions standards, features 4,000-gallon fuel tanks, and includes AC traction motors providing greater durability than legacy DC systems. Meanwhile, Trinity Metro offered complimentary rides during the anniversary celebration.
