Mexican Carriers Demand Clearer U.S. Rules on Driver Visa Revocations

Mexico's freight transportation industry is pushing U.S. border authorities to establish consistent standards for revoking B-1 visas for cross-border drivers, citing concerns over cabotage enforcement ambiguity. The National Chamber of Freight Transportation says unclear rules on what constitutes violations are removing experienced operators from international routes and destabilizing capacity. Leaders met with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in February after revocations began escalating. However, enforcement actions have continued in periodic waves. The chamber estimates 150 to 200 drivers in the Mexicali region have lost visas through mid-2026. Industry officials worry that repeated enforcement waves without transparent criteria are damaging the working relationship with regulators and creating unpredictability for carriers, shippers and manufacturers dependent on cross-border operations. The Calexico-Mexicali crossing remains a critical commercial port of entry for regional trade.
