Microsoft is negotiating to supply its Maia artificial intelligence processors to Anthropic, which could help the software giant compete with Amazon and Google in the custom silicon market. Microsoft unveiled its second-generation Maia 200 chip in January but has not yet rolled it out through Azure cloud services. No deal has been finalized between the two companies. Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei acknowledged the company faces "difficulties with compute" as demand for its Claude assistant accelerates. Microsoft committed $5 billion to Anthropic in November, while the AI firm pledged to spend $30 billion on Azure services. Anthropic also relies on cloud infrastructure from Amazon and Google. The computing constraints underscore intense competition for specialized silicon resources among major AI developers.
