French artificial intelligence startup Mistral is evaluating the possibility of designing its own semiconductors, CEO Arthur Mensch said. The move reflects the company's effort to control more of its operational infrastructure as it competes with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Mensch noted that custom chips could significantly reduce deployment costs. The company currently relies on Nvidia as its primary chip partner while testing other options.

Valued at nearly 12 billion euros, Mistral announced a new data center in France dedicated to inferencing operations. Mensch stated that Europe lags behind in infrastructure buildout, and Mistral is investing to close that gap.

Mistral serves enterprise customers including chip equipment manufacturer ASML. Should the startup pursue in-house chip development, it would mirror strategies employed by major U.S. hyperscalers Amazon and Google, which have deployed custom semiconductors to strengthen hardware-software integration and competitive positioning.
