Cook County Sheriff's Police orchestrated a 24-hour national enforcement sweep targeting cargo theft networks. The operation recovered approximately $635,000 in stolen merchandise and resulted in multiple arrests. Federal, state and local authorities participated, including the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, Illinois State Police and Chicago Police Department. Railroad carriers Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, BNSF Railway and CSX joined private security firms and industry groups in the effort. Sheriff Tom Dart oversaw the initiative, described as the nation's first dedicated cargo theft enforcement blitz. Investigators recovered 30 stolen transformers valued at roughly $600,000, discovered at a Massachusetts facility on September 23. The equipment had been fraudulently shipped using a forged bill of lading and moved through multiple distribution hubs. Authorities collaborated across Texas, Massachusetts and Illinois during the investigation. Final arrest counts and comprehensive statistics from all participating agencies remain pending.
