A New Mexico jury has awarded $47 million to a pickup truck driver and his mother following a 2022 head-on collision with a commercial tanker truck. Austin Drewry Jackson, 21 at the time of the crash, and his mother Crystal Gayle Drewry brought suit against Pilot Thomas Logistics LLC and Maxum Petroleum Operating Company. The verdict, handed down by the First Judicial District Court in Tierra Amarilla, ranks among the state's largest trucking accident awards in recent years. Jackson sustained severe traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage and internal organ injuries from the collision on a two-lane highway near Carlsbad during November 2022. Allegations centered on excessive speed for weather conditions and driver failure to react. The defense had offered $100,000 before trial. This verdict reflects ongoing concerns about jury awards exceeding $10 million and their effects on industry insurance and financial stability.
