New York Magazine is reviewing contract writer Ross Barkan's published work after multiple plagiarism allegations surfaced this week. Barkan's story on conservative influencer Ben Shapiro drew initial scrutiny for closely mirroring a Washington Post piece, prompting the magazine to add direct attribution. NPR investigation identified at least two additional instances where Barkan reportedly extracted passages from The Intercept and Compact Magazine without proper attribution. Some copied sections contained identical 30-word sequences or near-verbatim passages with minor word modifications. Compact Magazine editor Matthew Schmitz publicly condemned what he called Barkan's "heavily plagiarized" article. Barkan defended his approach, asserting he provided hyperlinks to source material and credited authors whose work he drew upon. He argued that columnists are permitted to cite facts when properly credited.
