NextEra Energy announced plans Monday to acquire Dominion Energy in a roughly $67 billion deal. The combination would create the largest electricity producer in the United States. The merger requires federal and state approvals in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The merged company would also cover Florida. Electricity demand has surged and residential rates have climbed 7.4% year-over-year as of February, with steeper increases in some states. NextEra CEO John Ketchum said the merged company's scale and operational efficiencies would result in lower customer rates. The company is proposing $2.25 billion in bill credits over two years for Dominion customers in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Consumer advocates have expressed concerns that consolidation could lead to price increases rather than savings.
