Norfolk Southern reported third-quarter profit increases driven by higher shipment volumes and elevated fuel surcharges, which accounted for eight of fourteen percentage points of revenue growth. The railroad moved 3% more freight across all major categories—merchandise, intermodal, and coal—during the period. CEO Mark George cited steady network execution and improved productivity. The company's operating ratio reached 67.8 points compared with a year earlier, largely reflecting heightened fuel expenses. Adjusted figures excluding East Palestine derailment-related costs and merger-related expenses showed a 65-point operating ratio. A constrained trucking market and elevated energy prices are driving shippers toward rail alternatives, particularly in forest products, consumer goods, and domestic intermodal segments. The railroad remains cautious about international intermodal amid trade uncertainty. Coal demand is projected to gain from utility stockpile replenishment and export activity.
