Norfolk Southern is marking America's 250th anniversary with a special series of six custom locomotives that will traverse the East Coast. Wabtec/General Electric built the units in Erie, Pennsylvania, and feature custom paint schemes honoring iconic American symbols: the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, and bald eagle. The designs also recognize NS's heritage and the contributions of predecessor railroads in transporting national treasures across the country. Craftsmen at the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania will complete the painting work. The first locomotive in the series pays tribute to the Liberty Bell, commemorating the Pennsylvania Railroad's historic role in transporting the symbol across America. The initiative reflects NS's commitment to celebrating two centuries of rail's role in connecting commerce and communities nationwide.
