Norfolk Southern and Wabtec Corp. are converting 33 ES44DC locomotives to AC-traction ES44ACM models as part of a fleet modernization initiative. The upgrade will incorporate advanced control systems and digital technology to boost reliability and operational efficiency while extending locomotive lifespan.
Enhanced diagnostics and predictive maintenance planning will reduce lifecycle costs and improve productivity. Wabtec will perform the conversions at facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and Erie, Pennsylvania, with work continuing through 2027. The first locomotive completed the upgrade this month.
AC-traction conversions deliver superior low-speed pulling power and adhesion compared to DC systems while providing stronger lifecycle economics. Norfolk Southern and Wabtec have partnered on more than 1,000 DC-to-AC conversions since 2015, following the railroad's initial ES44DC acquisition in 2004.
