A Utah jury's $86 million verdict against QXO, despite finding no carrier negligence, underscores an escalating legal crisis threatening motor carriers and brokers across the industry. Covenant Logistics Group founder David Parker cited the ruling as symptomatic of existential litigation risks facing the sector. Parker reported insurance costs have climbed roughly 300% over three to four years while total coverage dropped 50%. He estimates meaningful tort reform now has a 20% probability of passing, up from near-zero historically, citing increased political attention to litigation issues. Parker has traveled to Washington six or seven times since October to advocate for federal reform measures. The American Trucking Associations is leading industry lobbying efforts. Meanwhile, DOT enforcement activity initiated last October has removed an estimated 2% to 3% of market capacity. Parker characterizes the current freight cycle as early-stage amid projected revenue gains.
