NYC Launches Major BQE Repair Plan With Temporary Routing

New York City announced a comprehensive repair initiative for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway's critical central section Monday. The plan addresses structural deterioration that has strained the 1.5-mile stretch for years. Mayor Zohran Mamdani's plan centers on constructing a temporary two-level alternate roadway, enabling continuous traffic flow while crews execute extensive repairs to the highway's deck, walls, joints and drainage systems. The corridor handles 13,000 to 14,000 heavy-duty trucks daily, serving as a vital link between the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and routes extending into Long Island, the Bronx and New England. The city's Department of Transportation emphasized the project will repair and strengthen the existing structure rather than expand capacity. The roadway will maintain its current two-lane configuration with existing interchange and exit points unchanged.
