The Port of Oakland moved 173,818 TEUs in August, with loaded container volumes totaling 131,666 TEUs, representing a 9% decline compared to August 2025. Export shipments rose 2.9% from July, signaling month-to-month recovery for the gateway dependent on agricultural cargo flows. Empty-container traffic dropped 11.4% annually to 42,152 TEUs, a potential indicator of softer import demand ahead. Vessel calls declined to 82 from 90 a year earlier. Through eight months, loaded volumes remained down 2% compared to 2025, with export traffic running slightly ahead of the 2025 pace, according to Acting Maritime Director Jason Garben. Oakland faces ongoing competitive pressure as carriers concentrate services at larger West Coast hubs and redirect vessel rotations northward. Port officials plan increased engagement with ocean carriers and shippers to develop new cargo opportunities.
