Container rates surged across major east-west shipping lanes this week, with spot prices climbing at least $1,000 per forty-foot equivalent unit following general rate increases and surcharges that took effect June 1. Asia-West Coast routes now average approximately $3,200 per FEU, while Asia-East Coast service commands $5,000. Asia-Europe pricing stands at $3,000 to North Europe and $4,400 to the Mediterranean. The spike reflects converging market pressures: the ongoing Strait of Hormuz closure has maintained elevated fuel surcharges, while early peak season demand from retailers is tightening available container space. Spot rates across Asia export lanes have climbed roughly 15% since mid-May and sit approximately 20% higher than year-ago levels. The world's largest liner operator reported one of its vessels sustained hull damage from projectiles while transiting the Persian Gulf, underscoring regional tensions that constrain supply.
