The May 10-17 DOT enforcement blitz produced a 32.8 percent out-of-service rate, significantly exceeding the prior year's 18.8 percent benchmark. Federal safety inspectors conducted 15,952 total inspections across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Day one alone yielded 496 out-of-service orders from 1,580 inspections, establishing a 31.4 percent failure rate. The CVSA-coordinated three-day roadcheck targeted ELD tampering and cargo securement, yet brake system failures, tire violations, and lighting defects generated the highest volume of actual failures. Level I inspections evaluate 37 critical components and driver qualifications. CVSA noted that final official results were still being finalized as of mid-May. Safety experts note that drivers uncertain about compliance status may have avoided inspection sites, potentially skewing failure percentages upward by reducing the pool of compliant vehicles encountered.
