Over 100 Container Ships Abandon Panama Registry as China Escalates Port Inspections

More than 100 containerships have switched away from Panama's flag registry following increased Chinese port detentions and inspections. The shift accelerated after Panama's courts reassigned major port concessions at Balboa and Cristobal from CK Hutchison to operators affiliated with Maersk and MSC in January. Detentions of Panama-flagged container vessels have climbed more than 700% since March, with Chinese shipowners accounting for 56 of the 101 vessels that reflagged. The exodus has reduced Panama's containership fleet by 12%, leaving the remaining 731 vessels vulnerable to further action. Ships are migrating primarily to the Marshall Islands, Bahamas, and Liberia registries. Reflagging typically requires one to four weeks depending on paperwork efficiency and registry approval. China's government attributed the increased inspections to safety concerns, claiming Panama-flagged ships had the highest number of serious maritime accidents in Chinese waters.
