Panstar Takes Delivery of Containership for Northern Sea Route Launch

South Korean ferry operator Panstar Line has acquired a containership from HMM to launch its first Northern Sea Route passage. The company took delivery of the 2011-built, 2,700-teu vessel on Sunday and is pursuing polar navigation certification by mid-August. The renamed Panstar Acro is undergoing modifications in Busan to withstand Arctic conditions ahead of its August 22 departure for Hamburg, Gdansk, and Rotterdam. The vessel will carry a 20-strong crew, including one member with NSR navigation experience. The estimated $26 million acquisition signals Panstar's confidence in the NSR as a viable Asia-Europe corridor, offering roughly 36% faster transit than traditional routes. Both China and South Korea view the passage as critical infrastructure as major carriers increasingly avoid the Suez Canal due to geopolitical risks, instead routing around the Cape of Good Hope.
