The U.S. Department of Defense has selected Shield AI to integrate autonomous software into low-cost unmanned combat systems. The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering will deploy Shield AI's Hivemind technology to coordinate LUCAS drone swarms in rapidly evolving battlefield conditions. The $35,000 LUCAS platforms, manufactured by Arizona-based SpektreWorks, represent a cost-effective alternative to legacy weapons systems. Shield AI's autonomous capabilities enable drones to operate and make tactical decisions without real-time human control. The partnership addresses escalating material costs while improving force protection. Co-founder Brandon Tseng emphasized the program reduces expenses while equipping military personnel with necessary tools. The companies did not disclose financial terms. LUCAS drones have already seen operational deployment in Ukraine, signaling Pentagon confidence in the platform's effectiveness.
