The Port of Philadelphia is moving forward with its largest expansion initiative, backed by $371 million in state investment alongside $466 million from federal and private sources. The project will construct a 2,000-foot berth at Southport Marine Terminal, marking the first new berth installation at the facility in over 50 years. Container throughput capacity is projected to increase 122%, while automobile handling will grow 18%. The modernization effort encompasses dredging, infrastructure upgrades, and new cargo equipment across 152 acres at Mustin Yard. Upon completion, port-related employment is expected to reach 14,000 positions, up from the current 8,000. The expansion will generate an estimated $45 million annually in state and local taxes. Terminal operator Holt Logistics and vehicle processor Glovis America have each committed $100 million toward the initiative. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027 following permitting completion.
