The Port of Los Angeles moved 890,861 TEUs in April, marking a 5.7% increase year-over-year and the second-strongest April in the facility's history. Through the first four months, the port has handled 3,279,704 TEUs, running 2% ahead of its five-year average despite uncertainty surrounding trade policy. Loaded imports reached 459,825 TEUs, up 5% annually and 21% from March, while empty container repositioning jumped 10% to 303,310 TEUs as ocean carriers prepare for peak season eastbound shipments. Port executives attribute the strength to sustained consumer demand and retailer confidence in moving merchandise despite tariff headwinds. However, diesel fuel costs have surged 50% since the start of the year, raising concerns that trucking operators may begin passing increased expenses to shippers. Back-to-school and early holiday cargo from Asia is already building momentum for the next import wave.
