The Port of Los Angeles processed more than 1 million container units in June, marking the busiest June in the port's 118-year history and the third-best month ever recorded. Imports reached 530,000 TEUs, up 13% year-over-year and 18% above the five-year average, representing the third-highest import month on record.

Port executives attribute the surge to shifting shipper behavior, with importers advancing cargo strategically rather than following traditional seasonal patterns. Companies are navigating tariff uncertainty and rising fuel costs in their shipping decisions. Exports remained flat at 126,000 TEUs, while empty containers totaled 345,000 units, up 17% annually as equipment returns across the Pacific.

Through June, the port has moved 5.1 million TEUs, running 3% ahead of 2024 pace and 4% above the five-year average. Significant tariff policy changes set for July 24 will reshape import strategies moving forward.
