Brokerages, startups and individual investors are developing automated trading systems to manage investment portfolios around the clock. The technology enables investors to set parameters around risk tolerance and financial goals, then allow systems to execute trades and manage assets without constant human oversight. Citizens' head of financial technology research indicated such systems could eventually manage taxes, cash balances, borrowing arrangements and mortgages alongside investment portfolios. Podium Markets AI has deployed an assistant called Ivy that analyzes customer portfolios across multiple brokerage accounts and generates recommendations based on investor objectives and risk parameters. However, the system currently stops short of autonomous execution, requiring users to approve trades before implementation. Industry participants are taking measured approaches to automation rather than attempting fully autonomous systems immediately, with human decision-making remaining central to the process.
