Rail Champions, backed by GoRail, launched a campaign on June 9 calling for the Unicode Consortium to add a modern freight locomotive emoji to its global standards. The current emoji depicts a 19th-century steam engine, outdated given the evolution of America's 140,000-mile freight rail network. GoRail President Betsy Cantwell said the industry has transformed while digital representations have stagnated. Contemporary freight locomotives feature advanced onboard sensors, GPS-enabled safety systems, real-time data networks and fuel-saving automation. Systems like Positive Train Control enhance safety and reliability across the network. The advocacy push invites rail professionals, enthusiasts and the public to petition for the emoji's inclusion. GoRail argues emojis shape public perception of industries and ideas, making digital representation critical as freight rail approaches its 200th anniversary in America.
