The transportation sector gathered in Pueblo, Colorado in May to address emerging safety challenges posed by expanding battery deployment across rail and other sectors. A two-day summit hosted at Colorado State University-Pueblo brought together representatives from railroads, transit agencies, emergency responders, manufacturers, standards bodies and federal authorities. Participants witnessed a full-scale battery fire demonstration at the Federal Railroad Administration's Transportation Technology Center, observing system failures and suppression strategies under controlled conditions. The event was convened cooperatively by the Department of Transportation and Department of Defense. Participants included the FRA, PHMSA, EPA, National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, Siemens, the U.S. Navy and battery manufacturers. As railroads evaluate battery-electric and hybrid locomotive applications, the summit aimed to examine practical challenges surrounding safe movement, operation and emergency response protocols for large-format battery systems.
