A significant uptick in rail traffic across multiple sectors signals growing strength in the broader industrial economy, according to FreightWaves SONAR analysis. Rail carload traffic rose 2.5% while intermodal shipments jumped 8% year-over-year on a four-week rolling average basis. The gains underscore expanding demand throughout the supply chain and represent a historically reliable indicator of economic expansion.
Meanwhile, federal safety regulators face mounting pressure to strengthen carrier vetting standards. The Truckload Carriers Association warned that roughly 1,100 federal employees oversee nearly 8 million regulated entities, creating significant oversight gaps. The organization called on Congress to mandate more rigorous qualification requirements for operating authority, arguing current standards are insufficient to protect public safety.
