South Korea's president called for balanced negotiations between labor and management Monday as Samsung Electronics faces an 18-day strike threat beginning May 21. President Lee Jae Myung urged respect for both worker rights and corporate operations, warning that "excess is not beneficial; extremes lead to reversal." The union representing over 47,000 workers is demanding performance bonuses equal to 15% of operating profit, removal of bonus caps, and a formalized bonus structure. Samsung's management has countered with an offer of 10% of operating profit for bonuses and special compensation. Government officials warned the strike could disrupt South Korea's broader economy. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok indicated authorities would explore emergency measures if the walkout causes significant economic damage. A final negotiation round was scheduled for Monday.
