The Port of Savannah is moving forward with a major infrastructure project to boost container handling. The planned 3.5 million TEU terminal will bring the port's total annual capacity to 12 million TEUs once operational. The expansion comes as container volumes surge across U.S. ports. Savannah itself posted a September record, with box traffic climbing 3.7 percent year-over-year. The growth reflects broader trends in the sector, with global container volumes reaching 17.46 million TEUs in August and ocean pricing climbing to two-year highs. Port operators nationwide are responding to demand pressures. An inland terminal project in Montgomery, Alabama is also underway, with the $100 million facility designed to move 60,000 TEUs annually via CSX rail connections to Mobile.
