Regulatory enforcement over the past seven to eight months has significantly reduced trucking capacity, creating tight conditions in the truckload market, according to Schneider National CEO Jim Filter. The crackdown targeted non-domiciled commercial driver's licenses, electronic logging device violations, and inadequate driver training, removing substantial truck supply from circulation. Driver retirements are outpacing new entrants as historical recruitment channels have closed. Filter noted immigration has traditionally supplied a major portion of drivers, but spot rates must rise considerably to attract new workers. The current freight upcycle could extend four years or longer given structural supply constraints. On demand, housing and autos remain key variables, with pent-up consumer demand described as a "compressed spring." Data centers and discount retailers represent bright spots as consumers trade down amid inflation pressures.
