Schneider National is shifting its primary eastern rail operations to Norfolk Southern under a partnership effective November, moving away from CSX. The agreement leverages Norfolk Southern's 22-state intermodal network to expand market access and network flexibility across the eastern United States.

Schneider operates approximately 23,900 chassis, 26,800 containers and more than 60 rail hubs across North America. Company drivers handle more than 90% of domestic dray moves.

Norfolk Southern is supporting the partnership through infrastructure investments including new Cincinnati-Atlanta service and double-stack clearance improvements on its East Edge route. The railroad is also expanding terminals in Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina and Illinois. Facility upgrades are underway in Atlanta, Louisville, Harrisburg, Chicago and other markets to improve reliability and reduce terminal dwell times.

Norfolk Southern reported 3% intermodal volume growth in third-quarter 2026, driven by steady consumer demand and network improvements.
